THE NORMAL HEART
Ryan Murphy
"In the new COVID era, it's easy to forget about the impact of one of the last big epidemics that disproportionately affected racial & ethnic minorites, when AIDS and HIV were billed as ‘gay cancer’ and hundreds of thousands of queer people in US died due to negligence and discrimination.”
“This film is an important reminder of the liberties and freedoms that are afforded to this generation, because of those who died and fought before us for representation and health care."

SATURN by NAO
HEAUX TALES by Jazmine Sullivan
"They're sexy, sultry and unapologetic. They both embody a sense of confidence and vulnerability that can seem contradictory to each other, but in fact just present a much stronger sense of self than most of us are willing to grant ourselves. Cooking for people requires us to have the same ability to balance those emotions, sometimes we feel one and sometimes the other, and that's ok"

CO-OWNER/CHEF OF THE ISLANDS
MARILYN REID
One thing is for sure, Chef Marilyn Reid knows how to feed a neighborhood. As one of two owners and head chefs at The Islands, Chef Marilyn has proven so time and time again since first opening The Islands in 2001. When she came to New York, she brought with her not only the culinary splendor of Jamaica, but all the charm, vibrancy, and energy that can be so hard to find here in the city.
This vitality is what often allows neighborhoods to thrive. After serving the Prospect Heights neighborhood for 16 long years, in 2017, Reid moved The Islands to a newer, larger space in Crown Heights. And business has only grown since, for both the restaurant and its neighboring businesses, so clearly it must be that Chef Marilyn is doing something exemplary.
